What happens when you visit a page

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Avenue #4133, Covina, CA 91723, United States, which processes data on our behalf as a processor. To deliver a page, Vercel's servers necessarily receive technical data from your browser: your IP address, the date and time, the page requested, the referring page, and your browser and operating system. This data is used to deliver the site, keep it secure and fix errors.

  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
  • Retention: Vercel keeps such data only as long as needed for these purposes and then deletes or anonymizes it.
  • Transfers outside the EU: Vercel is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, which the European Commission recognizes as providing adequate protection (Art. 45 GDPR).

Visitor statistics

We use Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not identify you. Visits are recognized only by a hash created from the incoming request, which is discarded after 24 hours. What is recorded with each page view: the time, the page, the referring page, an approximate location (country, region, city), your device type, operating system and browser. We only see aggregated numbers.

  • Legal basis: our legitimate interest in knowing which pages are read, so we can improve the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Fonts are served from our own domain, so loading a page doesn't contact Google Fonts or any other font service. Site search runs entirely in your browser: what you type is not sent to us or anyone else.

The tools in this section are loaded only after you agree in the cookie banner. If you don't answer, or you reject, your browser never contacts them. The cookies they set are listed in the cookie policy.

  • Legal basis: your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR, and for storing or reading data on your device, the cookie rules that implement Art. 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive).
  • Withdrawing consent: at any time, under or the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page. This stops the tools and deletes their cookies; it doesn't affect what was processed before.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics 4 is provided by Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, which processes the data on our behalf. It records which pages you open, the page or campaign link that brought you here, an approximate location (country, region, city), your device, browser and language, and a few interactions: playing a video, and clicking a link that leaves the site, such as "Subscribe on YouTube". Visits are recognized through an ID kept in a cookie. Google Analytics 4 does not store IP addresses.

  • Purpose: understanding which pages are read and where readers come from.
  • Retention: data tied to a cookie ID is deleted after 2 months; after that we only see aggregated reports.
  • Transfers outside the EU: Google may process data in the United States; Google LLC is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

When you play a video

Videos are hosted on YouTube. Until you press play, a page only shows our own thumbnail and nothing is loaded from YouTube. When you press play, your browser loads the YouTube player from youtube-nocookie.com ("privacy-enhanced mode"). From that moment Google Ireland Limited, Gordon House, Barrow Street, Dublin 4, Ireland, receives your IP address and technical data about your browser, and may store cookies or similar data on your device and use them as described in Google's privacy policy. Google may also transfer data to the United States; Google LLC is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

  • Legal basis: your request to play the video (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, and for anything stored on your device, your action of pressing play). If you don't want this, don't press play: every video also has a "Watch on YouTube" link.

Links to YouTube (for example "Subscribe") take you to YouTube itself, where Google's privacy policy applies.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15);
  • have it corrected (Art. 16) or erased (Art. 17);
  • restrict its processing (Art. 18);
  • receive it in a portable format (Art. 20);
  • object at any time to processing based on our legitimate interests (Art. 21);
  • withdraw a consent you gave, at any time (Art. 7(3)).

Since we don't keep accounts or identify visitors, we usually hold no data that can be linked to you, but we'll answer every request. Write to contact@theordinaryoddities.com.

You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority, in particular the one where you live or work, or the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing (ANSPDCP).

Changes

If we change how the site processes data, for example by adding a newsletter, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
